{"id":4767,"date":"2026-06-17T17:16:21","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T21:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mjmsandbox.wpenginepowered.com\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=4767"},"modified":"2026-06-26T12:39:54","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T16:39:54","slug":"guided-tour-of-back-river-cemetery","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/museejuifmontreal.ca\/en\/event\/guided-tour-of-back-river-cemetery\/","title":{"rendered":"Guided Tour of Back River Cemetery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>On June 2, join artist Sonia Bazar for a walking tour of the Back River Cemetery and Memorial Gardens<\/strong>, one of the city\u2019s oldest Jewish cemeteries located in Ahuntsic, and the subject of Bazar\u2019s ongoing solo exhibition at the Museum of Jewish Montreal, on view until June 9.<\/p>\n<p>Guests will be immersed in the cemetery\u2019s tumultuous 140-year history as Bazar dives into the circumstances behind its founding, evolution, and near-abandonment. Informed by research conducted by Bazar, Dr. Anna Sheftel, and other collaborators at Concordia University, guests will leave with unique insight into this overlooked and enigmatic place in Montreal&#8217;s landscape. A Q&amp;A will follow the guided tour. The tour will take place in English, but guests may ask questions in French.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Please note that this tour will take place onsite at the Back River Cemetery. We will meet outside of the northern exit of Sauv\u00e9 Metro, on the northwest corner of Rue Sauv\u00e9 and Rue Berri.\u00a0<\/strong>We advise guests to wear appropriate footwear, and to be mindful of their surroundings as some areas of the cemetery&#8217;s terrain are crowded and uneven.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tickets are $10 plus tax.<\/strong>\u00a0As capacity is limited, please register in advance to avoid disappointment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Sonia:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sonia Bazar\u00a0is a Montreal-born and based artist, who holds an MFA in Photography from Concordia University. Through sculpture, photography and poetry, their practice examines the notion of alien landscapes and how the body belongs to space. After having shown their work in Canada, Germany, and Spain,\u00a0<em>BACK RIVER<\/em>\u00a0marks Bazar\u2019s first solo exhibition in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p><u>WEATHER POLICY:<\/u>\u00a0In the event of light rain, the tour will go on as scheduled. If there is a strong warning of heavy rain and\/or thunderstorms, the tour will be postponed.
