SUMMARY:Finding Balance with Donny Lebowitz
DESCRIPTION:On June 18\, join us for an evening of live rap performance and guided introspection with Finding Balance\, featuring Donny Lebowitz. \nIn advance of the launch of their first Gay Jewish Rap Album\, Montreal-based artists Alex R and Josh FG invite you to this intimate and interactive debut performance. Donnie Lebowitz has ascended from Cavendish Mall beginnings to finding his voice as a rap performer. With original klezmer inspired beats produced by Alex R\, Donnie’s slick flows are transfixing. \nExpect candlelight\, cushions\, herbal tea\, and a rap album preview performance with live acoustic musical accompaniment. Q&A and optional writing exercise to follow. Admission is free. Reserve your spot. \nAccessibility: Please note that the upper floors of our building are currently not accessible to visitors with limited mobility. This workshop will take place on the ground floor. \nThis event is a part of the Museum of Jewish Montreal’s 2026 Microgrant Program for Creative or Cultural Exploration\, made possible with support by the Azrieli Foundation\, the Betty Averbach Foundation\, the Canadian Race Relations Foundation\, and CANVAS.

SUMMARY:Cyanotype Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What better way to embrace the sun than solar printing? On June 21\, join us with artist Sonia Bazar for a cyanotype workshop. \nWorkshop participants are invited to create their own cyanotype print using pretreated cyanotype fabric\, found plant matter and personal household items. During the workshop\, Bazar will guide guests in creating their pieces\, and will demonstrate how the medium is used in her artistic practice. Upon bringing the cyanotypes home\, prints can be stitched into a tote bag\, hoodie\, or even a quilt for an added special touch. All levels of experience are welcome! \nMeeting Point: We will meet the corner of Rue St-Dominique and Av. Fairmount (approximate address: 5198 rue St-Dominique). Afterwards\, we will make our way back to the Museum of Jewish Montreal (5220 boul. St-Laurent). \nIn addition to foraged materials\, guests are encouraged to bring items from home! We suggest objects with elements of translucency and that can easily fit under a sheet of glass. Some ideas include: \n\nLace\nMesh\nJewelry\nPhoto negatives\nSmall figurines\nDried flowers\nButtons\nThread or yarn\n\nTickets are $25\, with all necessary materials provided. Due to limited capacity\, advanced registration is encouraged. Reserve your spot here. \nSonia Bazar is a Montreal-born and based artist\, who holds an MFA in Photography from Concordia University. Through sculpture\, photography and poetry\, their practice examines the notion of alien landscapes and how the body belongs to space. Sonia’s work has been shown in Canada\, Germany\, and Spain. In 2023\, Bazar presented her multidisciplinary practice in the exhibition BACK RIVER at the Museum of Jewish Montreal. \nImage: Courtesy of Sonia Bazar.

SUMMARY:Red Light Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:For the first time this season\, join us for a tour of Montreal’s historic Red Light District with Karen Herland! Come learn about this storied district in a walk through its landmarks and alleyways. \nSex work\, especially in its most visible forms\, tends to be recognized as a problem\, requiring intervention and eradication. As a major transportation hub and port city\, many sectors of Montreal’s economy were intertwined with the sex trade\, even as police and politicians manipulated social responses (positive and negative) to the presence of a thriving Red Light District. From Maimie Pinzer to Harry Ship and through to the present day\, this tour explores the social\, economic\, labour\, cultural\, racial\, and gender history of Montreal through its former Red Light\, which for decades thrived in the heart of Montreal’s burgeoning Jewish community. \nThis tour covers 150 years and 10 city blocks over 1.5-2 hours. The tour begins on the southeast corner of Boulevard René Lévesque and Boulevard St. Laurent and ends near St. Laurent Metro station. Please note that while the tour will be led in English\, questions can be asked and answered in French. Reserve your spot here. \nTICKETS:\nAdults: $26\nAges 65+: $24\nStudents: $14\nAges 12 and Under: $8 \nPoint of Departure: We will meet on the southeast corner of Boulevard René Lévesque and Boulevard St. Laurent. Please ignore the specific address of 1111 Boulevard St. Laurent\, as this is only an approximation. \nWeather Policy: In the event of light rain\, the tour will go on as scheduled. If there is a strong warning of heavy rain and/or thunderstorms\, the tour will be postponed. All registrants will have the option to attend the rescheduled tour. \nImage: Carte des bordels montréalais où les soldats ont contracté des maladies vénériennes : rapport de l’Armée sur la situation croissante des maladies vénériennes à Montréal. 1944.
