DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled. \n  \nOn Sunday\, July 26\, children\, their families\, and guests of all ages are invited to join MJM staff at Parc Jeanne-Mance for an afternoon of friendship bracelets in the spirit of Tu B’av – a holiday inspired by joy and love. \nBracelet-makers will be provided with beads\, string\, embroidery floss\, and other accoutrements needed to make a piece of jewelry for a special someone; whether that be a parent\, sibling\, friend\, or partner. You can also make something for yourself\, no judgement! Guests are welcome to bring any beads and/or crafts supplies from home that they’d like to include in their pieces. See you there! \nPlease note that due to the small size of the beads\, we recommend this activity for children ages 5+. Children must be accompanied by an adult companion. \n$10 plus tax. DESCRIPTION:On July 28\, join MJM for the first edition of our brand new historical walking tour in Montreal’s Old Port! \nWhile thousands of Eastern European immigrants famously settled in the Plateau neighbourhood in the early 20th century\, Canada’s First Jews steps further back in time\, highlighting the earliest formation of the Jewish community dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries in Montreal’s Old Port. \nFrom the disputed “first Jew in Canada” to fur traders\, rebels\, and merchants\, explore how early Jewish settlers navigated the changing worlds around them\, and formed a small\, but prominent community in Old Montreal\, that would form the foundation for future Jewish immigrants. \nThe tour will be led by the MJM’s Research Manager\, Benya Villani. \nPlease note that this tour will take place in English. DESCRIPTION:On August 2\, join us with artist Levana Katz for a marbling workshop! \nThis centuries-old practice uses paint and water to create mesmerizing\, one-of-a-kind designs on paper\, canvas\, and many other surfaces. From book covers to wallpapers\, paper marbling is a unique craft that anyone can try. Participants will learn about the art of paper marbling\, and will be able to take home their own unique designs. All levels welcome! \nPayment is offered on a pay-what-you-can basis from $8. Space is limited\, so early registration is encouraged. \nThis workshop will take place in Parc Outremont. Meeting point TBD. \nLevana Katz is an interdisciplinary artist based in Tiohtià:ke / Mooniyang (Montréal). She holds a BFA in Painting and Drawing from Concordia University. Levana creates multimedia installations\, primarily working across material processes such as drawing\, printmaking\, and fibre arts. Her work has been shown in several galleries in Montréal\, including Arprim\, Ada X and the Fofa Gallery. In 2023\, Katz moved to St. John’s\, Newfoundland to pursue the Don Wright Scholarship at St. Michael’s Printshop where she exhibited her first solo show\, Where the Ground Remembers You Twice. As the recipient of the Prix Albert Dumouchel\, Levana was granted a residency at L’imprimerie\, which she completed in 2025. Currently\, Levana works as an art educator at the Visual Arts Centre\, and is an alumni of the Montreal Jewish Museum’s Microgrant Program\, where she created the book By the tips of your fingers\, for the palm of my hand (2026). \nThis event is a part of the Montreal Jewish Arts Collaborative (MJAC)\, an initiative between the Montreal Jewish Museum\, KlezKanada\, and the Segal Centre. This program is made possible with support by the Averbach Family Foundation\, the Azrieli Foundation\, and CANVAS.

DESCRIPTION:Join us once again for a fascinating glimpse into Montreal’s Hasidic community through Outremont and the Mile End.\nFormerly the home to the vast majority of Montreal’s Jews in the first part of the twentieth century\, today\, the leafy neighbourhood hosts dozens of Hasidic groups and their synagogues. Led by Steven Lapidus\, this tour will illuminate Montreal’s Hasidic history through a tour of its institutions.\n\n* Please note that this specialty tour will be offered in French. \n\nSteven Lapidus\, PhD is a Montreal-based scholar of the history of Orthodox Judaism\, with a focus on North American Hasidism. A former co-curator at the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre\, he has published articles and book chapters in both English and French on Canadian Jewish history and the Hasidic experience in Canada. DESCRIPTION:Join artist Sonia Bazar for a walking tour of the Back River Cemetery and Memorial Gardens. One of the city’s oldest Jewish cemeteries located in Ahuntsic-Cartierville\, this burial ground plays a fascinating yet overlooked role in Montreal’s Jewish history. \nLearn all about the cemetery’s tumultuous 140-year history as Bazar dives into the circumstances behind its founding\, evolution\, and near-abandonment. Informed by research conducted by Bazar\, Dr. Anna Sheftel\, and other collaborators at Concordia University\, guests will leave with unique insight into this overlooked and enigmatic place in Montreal’s landscape. \nA Q&A will follow the guided tour. \nThe tour will take place in English\, but guests are welcome to ask questions in French. \nTicket Rates:\nAdults: $26\nAges 65+: $24\nStudents: $14\nAges 12 and Under: $8 \nAs capacity is limited\, we encourage guests to register in advance. \nPoint of Departure: We will meet outside of the northern exit of Sauvé Metro\, on the northwest corner of Rue Sauvé and Rue Berri. We advise guests to wear appropriate footwear\, and to be mindful of their surroundings as some areas of the cemetery’s terrain are crowded and uneven. \nWeather Policy: In the event of light rain\, the tour will go on as scheduled. SUMMARY:Windows to the Soul: A Painted Glass Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What do we see in ourselves and our histories when we hold them up to the light? \nIn 1962\, celebrated Jewish painter Marc Chagall’s 12 Tribe Windows were installed in the Abbell Synagogue at the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem\, each arched stained-glass window was painted by Chagall to represent one of Jacob’s 12 sons and what their respective tribe symbolizes. \nIn this workshop led by Merav Epstein\, we’ll be emulating Chagall’s process to make mini tribe windows to represent ourselves or our loved ones. This workshop will start with a short presentation on Chagall’s practice as a painter and how he moved into stained glass\, as well as a quick history on stained glass within Judaism and in Montreal. Ahead of Rosh Hashanah\, participants will reflect inward and sketch out ideas for what their own “tribe” window would look like\, what aspects would be represented\, before diving into painting their own mini window. \nNo prior painting or stained glass experience is required. All materials will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring along any objects of importance to them that they may want to depict in their window. Come solo or with friends or family. DESCRIPTION:Yiddish classes are back! Led by Zoë Belk\, this introductory eight-week course will teach students how to hold simple conversations\, read and write simple sentences in the Yiddish alef-beys\, and gain familiarity with traditional and contemporary Yiddish culture. It’s the perfect opportunity to ease your way into Yiddish culture and learning. \nParticipants of all ages and levels of experience are welcome! The class has limited capacity\, so be sure to sign up quickly. \nClasses will take place at MJM’s location at H. Fisher & Fils (4129 Boulevard Saint-Laurent) on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM and will run for eight weeks from September 16 through November 4. \nCourse Fee: $250\, $220 for students. SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Hannah Berger
DESCRIPTION:Join us with artist and writer Hannah Berger as she discusses her practice and shares her experiences from her time as artist-in-residence at Venezia Contemporanea in Spring 2026.  \nWhile in Venice\, Hannah explored the etymological origins of the word “ghetto” in reference to the site of foundry waste on top of which the Venetian Jewish Ghetto was originally built. Taking shape across multidisciplinary approaches\, Hannah’s research is being further developed into a project that combines sculpture\, installation\, and fiction writing. Considering the historic roots of the ghetto and its present reality\, Hannah’s work explores how we write and rewrite our own histories. \nThis artist talk will be moderated by MJM’s Artistic Director\, Alyssa Stokvis-Hauer. A Q&A will follow. \nRegistration is free\, but advanced registration is required as capacity is limited. \nHannah Berger is a Montreal-based visual artist and fiction writer who works in a variety of media. Her work is strung with common threads of history and the excavation of language\, often employing historical and experimental methods of making and storytelling. DESCRIPTION:For the last time this season\, join us for a tour of Montreal’s historic Red Light District with Karen Herland! Come learn about this storied district in a walk through its landmarks and alleyways. \nSex work\, especially in its most visible forms\, tends to be recognized as a problem\, requiring intervention and eradication. As a major transportation hub and port city\, many sectors of Montreal’s economy were intertwined with the sex trade\, even as police and politicians manipulated social responses (positive and negative) to the presence of a thriving Red Light District. From Maimie Pinzer to Harry Ship and through to the present day\, this tour explores the social\, economic\, labour\, cultural\, racial\, and gender history of Montreal through its former Red Light\, which for decades thrived in the heart of Montreal’s burgeoning Jewish community. \nThis tour covers 150 years and 10 city blocks over 1.5-2 hours. The tour begins on the southeast corner of Boulevard René Lévesque and Boulevard St. Laurent and ends near St. Laurent Metro station. SUMMARY:Intermediate Yiddish
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a base knowledge of Yiddish\, and you’re looking to improve your skills? By the end of this intermediate 8-week course led by Zoë Belk\, students will be able to hold more sophisticated\, nuanced conversations in Yiddish in a variety of tenses. They will have an understanding of contemporary Yiddish culture\, and of different Yiddish-speaking norms. They will begin to interact with Yiddish literature\, both traditional and contemporary. \nBeginners to Yiddish are encouraged to check out our Introduction to Yiddish course\, offered from September 16 to November 14. \nClasses will take place at MJM’s location at H. Fisher & Fils (4129 Boulevard Saint-Laurent) on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM and will run for eight weeks from November 11 through December 16. \nIf you would like to view the syllabus in advance\, please contact us at info@imjm.ca. \nZoë Belk is a researcher\, editor and translator living on the South Shore of Montreal. She has taught Yiddish at McGill University and a number of summer schools. Her research focuses on Contemporary Hasidic Yiddish and developments in Yiddish in the last 70 years. A linguist by training and an expert in plain language communication\, she is passionate about bringing Yiddish to a wider audience. \nAccessibility: Please note that the H. Fisher building is not currently accessible to visitors with limited mobility. Classes will take place on the second floor\, which is only accessible by stairs only.
